Why custom apps now pay off for SMEs too
Standard software is a good deal, as long as your processes are standard. The moment they aren’t, the bending begins: Excel islands next to the ERP, double data entry, workarounds only one person understands.
The alternative, a custom application, used to be a question of company size. Six-figure budgets, twelve-month project timelines, followed by a maintenance contract. Rarely justifiable for a company with 50 employees.
The new math
AI-native development on a proven platform changes both sides of the equation:
- Costs go down, because routine development is automated and the foundation (login, permissions, data protection, integrations) already exists.
- Value goes up, because the app maps exactly to your process instead of an industry average. And because AI features (assistants, automation, analytics) are built in from the start.
Concretely: what used to be a year-long project three years ago is now productive within weeks. An example from our own work: a Swiss security technology company is replacing its Dynamics 365 project module with a custom application. Quotes, project structures, service assignments with mobile reports. First working version: after days.
Where to start?
Not with the biggest problem, but with the most annoying recurring one. The process where your people sigh. That’s exactly where a custom solution shows what it can do fastest. It grows from there.
